Streams and Surface Waters

In a rapidly urbanizing county like Summit, the streams and surface waters often receive the full impact of development.

Problems associated with land development include increased storm water volume and velocity due to expanding impervious surfaces. Poor water quality as well as stream bank erosion and the coincident property loss are also issues that are linked to development.

     Summit SWCD Services:
  • Development of ordinances to protect streams and wetland.

  • Landowner assistance with stream bank erosion problems

  • Assistance to communities in implementing their stream protection legislation.

  • River-centered educational opportunities and activities including training for stream monitoring and storm-drain marking programs.

  • Post construction storm water quality treatment.

Riparian Setbacks are corridors set back from either side of a stream to protect the riparian area of the stream from the impacts of development and the streamside residents from impacts of flooding and land loss through erosion. Currently 20 communities in Summit County have regulations protecting these areas.

The Summit County Riparian Setback Ordinance became effective on May 29, 2002. The map shows the Summit County communities that have adopted this or a similar ordinance. Be sure to also read the first and second amendments and planting recommendations.
